When it comes to the choice of latex, RD-407 Mask Making Latex is considered the industry standard by top special effects artists and other professionals. Being a single component product, it can be directly brushed on or poured into the mold to create an excellent reproduction. It is especially formulated for use on plaster molds and sets by way of the water in the latex being absorbed by the plaster to deliver the mask in the form as desired.
The Procedure
The mask making starts with making a mold. The general shape desired for the mask can be made with clay or a mannequin head can be used. Foam or clay can be used to modify or accentuate any features as needed. A plaster mold is fashioned from this and will be used for making the mask.
Pour method – This is a relatively simple technique. Just pour the liquid latex directly into the hollow mold and allow it to sit for an hour or so. In case the level of latex drops in the mold, it should be topped again. The latex forms a coating along the sides of the mold and the excess material is poured back into its original container. The mold is tilted to drain out the latex and allowed to cure for a day.
The mask can be peeled off from the mold and will be ready for use after finishing as needed.
Brush method – The finished shape of the head for the mask is coated with clay or plaster while shaping the facial features and other details with care. Once it is completely dry, it will serve as the base mold. Paint multiple layers of latex on the mold while allowing sufficient time for the previous layer to dry properly. It may call for 20 layers or so depending on the required thickness of the mask.
When the final layer is dry, the mask should be gently pulled off the mold head, before finishing it as desired. Applying a layer of petroleum jelly before applying the latex will allow the mask to come off very easily.
